Could artificial intelligence become one of humanity’s biggest threats before the end of this decade? A former researcher associated with OpenAI and Anthropic has raised a serious warning about the rapid development of advanced AI, suggesting that increasingly powerful systems could eventually pose an existential risk to humanity.

The warning comes at a time when AI companies are racing to build systems capable of performing increasingly complex tasks with minimal human intervention. While today’s AI tools remain far from the capabilities of science-fiction machines, experts continue to debate what could happen if future systems become significantly more autonomous and intelligent.

Former OpenAI, Anthropic Researcher Sounds the Alarm

AI researcher Jacob Coxon, who says he spent three years working on AI pretraining research at OpenAI and Anthropic, announced his resignation from Anthropic and shared his concerns publicly on X.

Coxon believes the AI industry is moving rapidly toward developing increasingly capable systems. He described the current race as a push toward what he calls “self-improving superintelligence.”

His concerns go beyond AI simply becoming better at writing, coding, research or other digital tasks. The possibility of systems becoming capable of improving their own abilities could, according to his argument, create entirely new safety challenges.

What Happens If AI Surpasses Human Intelligence?

One of the biggest questions surrounding advanced AI is whether machines could eventually outperform humans across a wide range of intellectual tasks.

Coxon warned that highly advanced AI could potentially become capable of activities such as sophisticated computer hacking, accelerating technological development and accessing important digital or physical resources.

The speed of progress is another major part of his concern. If AI capabilities continue advancing rapidly, he argues, humans may struggle to understand, predict or control increasingly autonomous systems.

“AI Could Kill Us All by the End of the Decade”

Coxon made an especially dramatic claim when discussing the potential dangers of advanced AI. He suggested that people working on these technologies genuinely believe AI could potentially “kill us all by the end of the decade.”

However, this should be understood as Coxon’s warning rather than a confirmed prediction. There is no established scientific consensus that AI will cause human extinction by 2030.

The statement reflects one side of a much wider discussion about whether sufficiently advanced AI could become difficult to control and what safeguards should be introduced before such systems are developed.

Is the AI Industry Advancing Too Quickly?

Coxon questioned whether the race to develop increasingly powerful models could encourage companies to prioritize speed and capability over safety. Whether the most extreme AI predictions will ever become reality remains uncertain. But as the race toward increasingly advanced artificial intelligence continues, the question of how powerful AI should become and how humans can keep it under control will only become more important.
