Punchline
Vijay shines in a few emotionally charged and mass-appeal moments, but an overstuffed screenplay, weak antagonist track, and excessive political references prevent Jana Nayagan from becoming the memorable farewell it aimed to be.
Storyline
Jana Nayagan follows the journey of Vetri Kondan (Vijay), a former police officer who becomes the guardian of a young woman (Mamitha Baiju) suffering from PTSD. Determined to help her become independent, he encourages her to fulfill her dream of joining the Indian Army.
As the story unfolds, Vetri Kondan’s mysterious past, his imprisonment, and his rivalry with the ruthless John Himlar (Bobby Deol) come to light. The film revolves around how Vetri Kondan confronts the villain’s dangerous plans under “Operation Meluga” while inspiring the young woman to overcome her fears.
Positives
Vijay delivers an energetic performance, especially during the flashback portions.
The flashback episode featuring Vetri Kondan is the biggest highlight of the film.
The Good Touch & Bad Touch sequence is handled with sensitivity and leaves a strong impact.
Mamitha Baiju impresses with a sincere performance in an emotionally demanding role.

Technicalities
Director H. Vinoth attempts to blend the original story with fresh political and commercial elements, but the execution fails to deliver. While the flashback portions work well, the rest of the screenplay struggles to maintain momentum.
Anirudh Ravichander’s music is below his usual standards, although a few songs and background score moments stand out. Cinematography, editing, production design, visual effects, and action choreography are surprisingly underwhelming, making the film feel rushed and inconsistent.

Jana Nayagan had all the ingredients to become a memorable farewell for Vijay’s acting career, but the decision to deviate from the proven screenplay of Bhagavanth Kesari ultimately works against the film. Vijay delivers a few crowd-pleasing moments, particularly in the flashback and emotional scenes, but they are not enough to overcome the weak villain, lifeless action blocks, and uninspiring screenplay. As a result, Jana Nayagan ends up being an underwhelming send-off for one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars.
