Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on the verge of achieving a historic milestone in Indian politics. In just a few days, he is expected to surpass a record that has stood since the early years of independent India, becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in the country’s history.
According to available calculations, June 10 is expected to mark a significant moment in Modi’s political journey. On that day, he will complete 4,399 days in office as Prime Minister, moving ahead of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served for 4,398 days in consecutive tenure.
Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, and has since led the country through three consecutive terms. His continued electoral success has allowed him to remain in office longer than any other non-Congress Prime Minister and place himself among the most enduring political leaders in India’s democratic history.
The achievement also puts him ahead of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s record of 4,077 days of uninterrupted service. Modi crossed that milestone earlier and is now set to overtake Nehru’s long-standing benchmark as well.
Beyond the duration of his tenure, Modi has already created several political records. Following the 2024 General Elections, he became only the second Prime Minister after Nehru to win three consecutive mandates from the electorate. Political observers note that while Indira Gandhi served three terms as Prime Minister, her tenures were not consecutive due to her electoral defeat in 1977.
Analysts believe that Modi’s records as a non-Congress Prime Minister may remain difficult to surpass in the near future. With his current term extending until 2029, there is potential for several more milestones to be added to his political legacy.
Additionally, when combining his years as Chief Minister of Gujarat and Prime Minister of India, Modi has already spent more than 8,900 days in elected executive office, making him one of the longest-serving public representatives in the country’s history. If he completes his current term, that figure could move closer to the 10,000-day mark, further cementing his place in Indian political history.
