Skyroot Creates History with Vikram-1
India’s private space sector reached a landmark moment on Saturday as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket. The historic mission, named Mission Aagaman, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR), Sriharikota, and completed its maiden flight with remarkable precision.
The launch turned out to be a complete success as all four stages of the rocket performed exactly as planned. Vikram-1 also successfully deployed its payloads into Low Earth Orbit, making it a textbook maiden mission for the Hyderabad-based space startup.
A New Era for India’s Space Industry
The successful launch places India among a select group of nations where private companies have independently designed, built, and launched orbital rockets. It also marks a significant milestone in the country’s growing commercial space ecosystem, proving that Indian private companies are ready to compete globally in satellite launch services.
Although the countdown experienced a brief technical hold before liftoff, the mission proceeded flawlessly after clearance. Stage separations, propulsion performance, and payload deployment were executed with exceptional accuracy, giving Skyroot a major confidence boost for future commercial missions.
What Makes Vikram-1 Special?
Standing nearly seven storeys tall, Vikram-1 is an all-carbon composite, multi-stage launch vehicle capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms into Low Earth Orbit. The rocket is powered entirely by propulsion systems developed in-house, including advanced 3D-printed rocket engines and high-performance solid rocket motors, showcasing India’s growing technological capabilities in space engineering.
The maiden mission carried technology demonstration payloads from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed, and Skyroot’s own SCOPE experiment. It also featured symbolic payloads, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handwritten “Vande Mataram” postcard, along with handwritten messages from ISRO leaders, Indian astronauts, Skyroot employees, investors, and supporters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally congratulated Skyroot founders Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka on the historic achievement. Praising the team’s success, he said the launch had not only planted “a new tree in space” but had also strengthened new roots on Earth to inspire future generations of innovators.
A Huge Boost for India’s Commercial Space Future
Founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot Aerospace has been at the forefront of India’s private space revolution. The company previously made headlines in 2022 when Vikram-S became India’s first privately built rocket to reach space.
With Vikram-1’s flawless orbital debut, Skyroot has taken a giant leap toward establishing regular commercial launches while validating years of research and engineering. The mission is also expected to generate valuable flight data that will help the company further enhance the Vikram launch vehicle family.
