Veteran Telugu actress Pavala Shyamala, celebrated for her memorable character roles and impeccable comic timing, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at the age of 75. The actress had been battling prolonged health issues and was undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad.
According to hospital authorities, Pavala Shyamala suffered a massive heart attack and breathed her last at 1:52 AM on July 28. Her mortal remains have been kept at the hospital mortuary.
The actress had reportedly been facing severe financial hardship and age-related health complications in recent years. Her daughter, who had been taking care of her, is also said to be struggling with serious health issues. The veteran actress’s difficult final years have left the Telugu film fraternity and fans deeply saddened.
Born in 1951 in Andhra Pradesh as Nethi Shyamala, she made her Telugu cinema debut with Babai Abbai in 1985. She rose to prominence with her performance in Swarna Kamalam, directed by K. Viswanath, and went on to appear in several memorable films, including Khadgam, Golimaar, and many others.
She became popularly known as “Pavala Shyamala” after playing the memorable “Pavala” character in Andhrawala, directed by Puri Jagannadh. Over the years, she established herself as one of Telugu cinema’s most dependable character artists, earning appreciation for her natural acting and effortless comic timing.
Pavala Shyamala’s passing marks the end of an era for Telugu cinema. Her tragic final years also highlight the harsh reality that not every film artist enjoys financial security after a successful career, with many veteran actors struggling in silence during their later years.
